The Humana Foundation Visits Senior Planet in Miami for a Day of Volunteering

Staff and leadership from the Humana Foundation visited the newly opened Senior Planet center in Miami on Wednesday, May 18. The visit served both as a volunteer and learning opportunity for the team about how the new Senior Planet center is already serving older adults in the Wynwood community!

The Humana Foundation group included ten staff members and CEO Tiffany Benjamin. The group sat in on various classes being held at the center that day, including Is that AI? and Connected to the Internet, as well as two classes presented in Spanish, Computer Essentials, and iPad Basics. Seven volunteers from the Foundation also engaged in 1-1 tech help sessions with some of the 45 Senior Planet participants.

“I was happy that the Humana Foundation team was able to experience  the day-to-day work that goes on at the Senior Planet center in Miami, and that they were able to get one-on-one time with participants and see the impact that programming is having on their day to day lives,” said Cesar Mendez Rijo, Center Manager.

Participants, including regulars and some new to the center, joined the Humana Foundation and Senior Planet staff for lunch after the event, and provided positive feedback about their experiences.

The Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Humana Inc., is a longtime supporter of the work of OATS, most recently in the form of a $750,000 grant to build social engagement and strengthen healthy emotional connections, and improve access to care among older adults in Kentucky, Florida, Louisiana, and Texas.
